The fact

The candhaleris of Nulvi, carried on the shoulder to fulfil a vow. The song is dedicated — a chie leat sos candhaleris — to those who carry them. The village lies below the mount of Santu Larentu; the candlesticks are dedicated to s'Assunta.

The lyrics

Logudorese of Nulvi
Nujvi! Tres palas, tres fainas Nujvi! Nujvi! Una boghe ibbia Su grogu de sas messas Su birde de sos prados Su colore 'e chelu In àteru logu sa forma est cambiada Inoghe, nono Nos naraiant restios Nois portamus noe cuintales deretos Nois portamus sèighi a sas istanghes, bator a sas funes Su tabernàculu tenet e sa bidda respirat Segus de sa janna serrada, sas fèminas la bestint Oro donadu in sèculos Sos òmines portant Sas fèminas bestint E sa Vìrgine Dormida isetat Oto seros, sos Apòstolos Oto seros, s'Apostuladu Oto seros nos incrubamus Oto seros E unu càntigu antigu in catalanu Innantis de Santa Rughe Pàulu artziat s'ispada Sa parma si segat Nujvi! Nujvi! Sa forma est cambiada, inoghe, nono Nujvi! Nujvi! Su votu abarrat Nujvi! Nujvi! Su votu abarrat Nujvi! Su votu abarrat Su bentu torrat a s'Anglona e connoschet su nùmene tou
English translation
Before the road, the stone Before the stone, the wind And the wind already knew your name On the peak of San Lorenzo I laid my hands Near eighty nuraghi keep watch over the roads So many people have passed you can sense the rich earth The land says nothing, the land remembers Torres, Doria, Aragon, and the wind, and the wind In forty-eight the last Doria surrenders They made us the centre And the centre held And whoever climbs to the village Nujvi! Nujvi! Three shoulders, three trades Nujvi! Nujvi! One voice only The yellow of the harvests The green of the meadows The colour of the sky Elsewhere the form has changed Here, it has not They called us slow to progress We carry nine hundred kilos held upright We carry sixteen on the poles, four on the ropes The tabernacle holds and the village breathes Behind the closed door, the women dress her Gold given over centuries The men carry The women dress her And the Sleeping Virgin waits Eight evenings, the Apostles Eight evenings, the Apostuladu Eight evenings we bow down Eight evenings And an ancient hymn rises in Catalan Before Santa Croce Paul raises the sword The palm breaks Nujvi! Nujvi! The form has changed, here, it has not Nujvi! Nujvi! The vow remains Nujvi! Nujvi! The vow remains Nujvi! The vow remains The wind goes back down to Anglona and it still knows your name

The reviews

The lyrics went to the people of Nulvi before release: on 14 August 2026, twelve numbered questions about the language in the group «Antichi scatti a Nulvi». Forty-two answers came back, several contradicting one another, each one settled in turn. Some corrections changed the song: the mountain is Santu Larentu and not Monte Alma, the Doria castle is at Tzaramonte and not here, càntaru is a fountain spout and not a unit of weight. The correct title in Nulvese would be «Su Votu Imbarat»: the published form is the one from the first version, and I am leaving it, saying so here. Thanks to the people of Nulvi, and to Manuel Pinna, keeper of the keys of Santa Croce.

If you know the village, the language or the history better than I do — and that is often the case — write to me. The corrections I have received so far have changed the lyrics, and they are credited on the song pages.
